Slate is an open-source web platform for schools that offers a suite of tools to facilitate new educational models such as project-based learning, competency-based learning, etc. Slate, at its core, is a Student Information System (SIS) that also offers single sign on (SSO) services for students & faculty. SSO enables schools to add third-party tools without the overhead of managing various usernames and passwords for several tools. In addition, Slate has partnered with four educational organizations to build custom tools such as a competency based learning credit tracker, standards based grading, asset management system, etc.
As Slate continued to grow organically over the years, several features were added and iterated upon. With the addition of new tools, the platform's UI regressed. I led the initiative to redesign the suite of tools and overall navigation to maintain a cohesive look and feel of the software. As the Director of Design, I worked with Slate's CEO, engineers, and school stakeholders to develop low-fidelity wireframes for new tools. From there, it is my responsibility to provide high fidelity wireframes that incorporate the school's branding elements (if applicable) and the overall Slate theme. I am also responsible for designing marketing supplies for Slate such as business cards, posters, and several iterations on the current marketing website. In 2015, when they rented a booth at ISTE (a prominent conference in the EdTech community), I worked with Slate's CEO to design the booth layout and supplies.
